Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Kumawu Constituency in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He hails from Kumawu-Bodomase and was born on Thursday, 31 January 1985.
Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim is a professional accountant and financial management specialist whose career spans both local and international institutions. His academic and professional background in commerce, statistics, financial economics and accounting has also contributed to his work in Parliament, particularly in areas involving public financial management and legislative oversight.
Education and Professional Background
Hon. Anim has a strong academic background in finance and related fields. He obtained a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Coast in 2009 and later pursued a Master of Financial Economics at Ohio University, which he completed in 2016. He also obtained a Certificate in Statistics from the University of Ghana.
In addition to his academic qualifications, Hon. Anim is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). His educational background has provided him with expertise in accounting, financial management and public finance. The official parliamentary profile also lists his earlier secondary education at Kumasi Academy.
Before entering Parliament, Hon. Anim worked in a number of professional positions. His previous employment includes serving as a Payment and Tax Specialist at Cardno Emerging Markets, Manager of Public Financial Management at DT Global Inc., and an Accountant at Vanguard Properties Development Company Limited. He also worked as an Accounts Officer at the Millennium Development Authority.
Entry into Parliament
Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim entered Parliament through the Kumawu parliamentary by-election held on 23 May 2023. The by-election became necessary following the death of the then sitting Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Hon. Philip Basoah, in March 2023.
The Electoral Commission’s certified results showed that Ernest Yaw Anim, representing the NPP, obtained 15,264 votes. The NDC candidate, Kwasi Amankwah, obtained 3,723 votes, while independent candidate Kwaku Duah obtained 2,478 votes. Another independent candidate with the same name, Kwaku Duah, received 62 votes. The total valid votes were 21,527.
Following his victory, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim was sworn into Parliament on 6 June 2023 by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. His election enabled the NPP to retain the Kumawu parliamentary seat following the death of the previous MP.
Re-Election in the 2024 General Election
Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim subsequently contested the 2024 parliamentary election and retained the Kumawu seat. The available constituency results show that he obtained 21,464 votes, representing 76.15 percent of the votes, while NDC candidate Kwasi Amankwaa obtained 6,723 votes, representing 23.85 percent.
His re-election placed him in the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, where he continues to represent the people of Kumawu.
Parliamentary Committee Role
In the current Parliament, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim serves as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights. The committee is responsible for matters including the promotion and protection of human rights, examining legislation for human-rights compatibility, monitoring Ghana’s obligations under international human-rights instruments, and following up on recommendations from international human-rights bodies.
He is also serves as a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
